Did you know that a underwater cabinet meeting was held by President Mohamed Nasheed of the Republic of Maldives with his cabinet members last November 5 2009. The underwater cabinet meeting was for signing the agreement regarding the global carbon emissions cuts to be presented in the upcoming UN climate summit in Copenhagen. Because The Maldives will be greatly and inevitably affected by the increase in sea levels caused by climate change. Hence this underwater cabinet meeting, held 6 meters underwater with the president, his cabinet members, staff and media all wearing scuba gear. Of course any underwater cabinet meeting would not be complete without underwater tables, paper, chairs and pen! This underwater cabinet meeting symbolizes how they would all be underwater if the UN meeting in Copenhagen would not push through.

According to the United Nations intergovermental panel on climate change sea levels would rise up to 7ft before the end of the century. Which is according to the facts presented at the underwater cabinet meeting would be enough to put the whole republic underwater. “We are all going to die if Copenhagen fails” said Mohamed Nasheed before the spectacled underwater cabinet meeting. The Maldivian government worried about losing their land and planning to purchase a new homeland as a precaution somewhere between India and Sri Lanka.

With this underwater cabinet meeting the President of the Republic of Maldives and its members sending the world a message. Through this underwater cabinet meeting they made a statement to the world that they will not just sit back and watch the sea claim their homeland. Let us all hope that in the future underwater cabinet meetings will still be just a stunt and not mandatory in the Maldives.
